Privet

Ligustrum sinense / Ligustrum lucidum

Privet species (both Small-leaved and Large-leaved) are highly invasive shrubs or small trees that were originally planted as hedging plants. They have escaped cultivation and now infest bushland, particularly along creeks and in moist gullies where birds spread their seeds.

How to Identify

  • Shrub or small tree 3-10 metres tall
  • Opposite, oval leaves (small-leaved has 2-6cm leaves, large-leaved 6-12cm)
  • Clusters of small white flowers with strong sweet scent
  • Masses of small dark purple/black berries
  • Bark is smooth and grey

Where It Grows

Prefers moist, fertile areas. Common in rainforest margins, along waterways, in urban bushland, and under tree canopies.

Environmental Impact

  • Produces massive quantities of bird-dispersed seeds
  • Forms dense thickets that shade out natives
  • Pollen can cause severe allergic reactions
  • Berries can be toxic to humans and some animals
  • Extremely difficult to eradicate once established

Control Methods

  • Hand pull seedlings when soil is moist
  • Cut and paint stumps with herbicide
  • Stem injection for larger specimens
  • Foliar spray for smaller plants
  • Must remove all root material to prevent regrowth
  • Regular follow-up treatment required for several years

Seasonal Activity

Flowers in spring/summer, fruits in autumn/winter.
