Mist Flower

Ageratina riparia

Mist Flower is a perennial herb that forms dense ground cover in moist, shaded areas. It spreads aggressively via creeping stems and produces masses of wind-dispersed seeds. It is particularly problematic along waterways and in rainforest understoreys.

How to Identify

  • Low-growing herb 0.5-1 metre tall
  • Opposite, triangular leaves with toothed edges
  • Clusters of small fuzzy white flowers
  • Purple-tinged stems
  • Creeping stems that root at nodes
  • Fluffy white seed heads

Where It Grows

Shaded, moist areas including creek banks, rainforest understoreys, and wet gullies.

Environmental Impact

  • Forms dense monocultures excluding natives
  • Spreads rapidly by both seed and vegetatively
  • Difficult to remove once established
  • Alters habitat for native fauna
  • Spreads along waterways

Control Methods

  • Hand pull small infestations (remove all root material)
  • Foliar spray for larger areas
  • Mulching can suppress regrowth
  • Time treatment before seeding
  • Multiple treatments usually required
  • Biological control agents available

Seasonal Activity

Flowers mainly spring and summer. Seeds disperse autumn.
