Lantana

Lantana camara

Lantana is one of Australia's most destructive invasive weeds. This woody shrub forms dense thickets that exclude native vegetation and create significant fire hazards. Originally introduced as an ornamental plant, it has spread aggressively across Queensland and is now classified as a Weed of National Significance.

How to Identify

  • Scrambling shrub growing 2-4 metres tall
  • Square stems with small hooked prickles
  • Rough, serrated leaves with strong smell when crushed
  • Flower clusters in pink, orange, red, yellow or white
  • Small round berries that turn from green to black when ripe

Where It Grows

Thrives in disturbed areas, forest margins, grasslands, and along waterways. Prefers warm, moist environments but tolerates drought once established.

Environmental Impact

  • Forms impenetrable thickets that exclude native plants
  • Toxic to livestock (cattle, horses, sheep)
  • Increases bushfire intensity due to high oil content
  • Provides harbour for pest animals like feral pigs
  • Reduces biodiversity and wildlife habitat quality

Control Methods

  • Manual removal effective for seedlings and small plants
  • Cut stump method with herbicide for larger plants
  • Foliar spray for dense infestations
  • Forestry mulching for large-scale clearing
  • Follow-up treatment essential as seeds persist in soil for years
  • Biological control agents available but not sufficient alone

Seasonal Activity

Flowers year-round in Queensland, with peak flowering in spring and summer.
