Bauhinia (Pride of De Kaap)

Bauhinia monandra

Pride of De Kaap or Orchid Tree is an ornamental tree that has escaped cultivation and become invasive in parts of Queensland. It produces showy flowers but spreads aggressively in disturbed areas and along waterways.

How to Identify

  • Small tree 5-8 metres tall
  • Distinctive butterfly-shaped leaves (bi-lobed)
  • Showy pink/white orchid-like flowers with red streaks
  • Long flat seed pods up to 25cm
  • Smooth grey bark

Where It Grows

Disturbed areas, roadsides, riparian zones. Tolerates a range of soil types.

  • Spreads from garden plantings
  • Can dominate disturbed areas
  • Seeds spread by wind and water
  • Competes with native vegetation
  • Forms dense stands

Control Methods

  • Hand pull seedlings
  • Cut stump with herbicide for larger plants
  • Stem injection for large trees
  • Remove seed pods before dispersal
  • Follow-up treatment for regrowth
  • Remove from gardens near bushland
